Frank Pepe: Original Tomato Pie w/ Mozzarella

20150810_132302Established in 1925, Frank Pepe as a long history of serving pizza to citizens of Yonkers and Connecticut. I walked in there not really knowing anything about the place except that the pizza was supposed to be good. I was immediately surprised to find out that instead of slices, Frank Pepe serves coal fired personal pies; and it is with a healthy curiosity that I dug into mine.

I’m not usually a fan of coal fired pizza, but this one was very good. It was crispy and had a medium sized crust (not too thin and not too thick) as well as a medium sized body; it was covered in both stringy and thick mozzarella cheese, an absolutely perfect choice for this pie.

The sauce they used was sweet and delicious, and the pie also had a nice dousing of olive oil which was a really nice accompaniment to the cheese and the sauce.

After one visit to Frank Pepe in Yonkers, I know I’ll be back; and I’m looking forward to trying their White Clam Pizza in the near future.

Nat’s Pub: Nat’s Burger

NatsPlace

I’ve been going to Elmsford for years, and every time I went, I’d drive by Nat’s Pub, home of “the best burger in town.” This of course peaked my interest and I’d always tell myself that I was going to go there. Finally, after years of telling myself this, I finally made it to Nat’s Pub.

Nat’s is a hole in the wall venue that makes some pretty good food; and after perusing the menu, I ordered “Nat’s Burger” to see if it truly was the “best burger in town.”

Now normally I wouldn’t touch a burger that has lettuce and tomato on it, but given this burger’s moniker, I decided not to change anything.

The meat was flavorful, juicy, and had a nice size and thickness to it; you really got a good amount of meat in every bite. The cheese was melted really nicely and covered a good section of the burger. Both the lettuce and the onions added a good crunch to the burger, and the tomato added extra juiciness.

The biggest difference between this and other burgers is that Nat’s tops theirs with mustard, which added a new, spicier flavor that I am not used to; though it was not a bad addition at all.

The only “downside” to this burger was that it was on a sandwich roll instead of the traditional hamburger bun, but in no way did it ruin the burger. As a side, the fries were quite good, crisp, full bodied, and tasty.

I would definitely recommend Nat’s Pub to anyone who is looking for a good burger in Elmsford, and so far I must agree with the assessment that it is the best burger in town.

City Limits: Chocolate Milkshake

nn

As I have mentioned before, I have been on the lookout for a good place to get a Milkshake ever since Cheeburger Cheeburger shut down; and while I managed to find one in Westchester Burger Co., my search has not yet ended. Fortunately, I have found another great spot in City Limits.

This shake has a great consistency, thick and of an ice creamy quality. You can really taste the chocolate within, and very importantly, it is cold. Ice cold.

When you try to suck it up through the straw, it takes some time coming up, which is exactly what you want in a proper Milkshake.

So if you are in the White Plains area and you are craving a Milkshake, I recommend visiting City Limits; you’re in for a treat.

Holy Smoke: Fried Buttermilk Chicken

download

Now for the Fried Chicken. I must say that I was looking forward to this dish for months because I was eager to see if I could actually find a good Fried Chicken place.

Sadly, KFC and Popeye’s tend to dominate the fried chicken scene in this general vicinity, with fast food being an option too easy to ignore. But thankfully, Holy Smoke has provided a much needed better option.

Every bit of this chicken was enjoyable; the skin was some of the best I’ve had, as it had a great crunch. The meat was thick and very juicy, and the grease content within was also very good, as it added to the flavor.

The meat was not too heavily seasoned (although double dipped in seasoned flour), nor did it need to be, due to the wonderful buttermilk that they used.

In regards to the sides, the chili was good and had a little spice to it, and the potato salad was creamy, chunky, and sweet. Both were nice additions to my chicken.

In my experience so far, Buttermilk Fried Chicken is the best dish at Holy Smoke; my opinion could very well change with increased tastings of different dishes, but all I know is that I’m looking forward to further excursions to Holy Smoke to find out!

Holy Smoke: Trash Rib Teasers

download

For my second visit to Mahopac’s Holy Smoke BBQ, I ordered an appetizer of Trash Rib Teasers, and a main course of their Fried Buttermilk Chicken. This review will focus on the ribs, with the Fried Chicken review soon to follow. Without further ado, these are Holy Smoke’s Trash Rib Teasers:

These ribs are absolutely fantastic. they are very thick and meaty, with moist flesh that has a nice, partially resistant tear off the bone. Each rib (there are four of them) is smoky in flavor, but is also doused with a good amount of sweet, (almost syrupy) BBQ sauce that fully enhances the flavor.

I cannot recommend these ribs enough; if you are going to spend a meal time at Holy Smoke, order these teasers as your appetizer, and enjoy this wonderful addition to a great BBQ restaurant.

Townhouse Diner: New England Clam Chowder

The Townhouse Diner in White Plains is now the second place I can recommend to have a good bowl of New England Clam Chowder.

This chowder has everything you are looking for and more; endowed with hearty and creamy consistency, this dish contains large clams, thick, sweetly flavored potatoes, and nice semi crunchy vegetables. Piping hot, it is the perfect thing to order on a cold day when you need some warmth.

Westchester Burger Co: Cheesecake

l

Lest we forget, Westchester Burger Co. does more than just burgers, they do desert too! Given that I’m a New Yorker through and through, Cheesecake is really the only option for me for a first time desert experience.

20150808_180922

This had everything you’d want in a desert of this nature; rich, cheesy, and sweet with that same fresh (possibly homemade) whipped cream, topped with juicy and flavorful strawberry’s. Along with the great flavor, it also had the perfect consistency and strange contradiction: light, and yet, somehow heavy. The crust on the bottom was also quite tasty.

Westchester Burger Co. certainly passes the test when it comes to making desserts. In fact, they have passed with flying colors on every test I’ve given them (burgers, appetizers, sides, shakes, and dessert), and I’m sure they will pass yours as well.
